BELGIAN WAFFLES
So what's the fuss about Belgian waffles anyway and do they really come from Belgium? Well yes, this is one food that we know comes from the country it is named after and is very popular there as well. For those who love a Belgian waffle for breakfast we suggest you try one of our great tasting Belgian waffles -- known to French-speakers as the "gaufre de Liege" (Liege waffle), and to the Flemish-speakers as the "suikerwafel" (Sugar waffle). Perhaps you have never heard of these waffles but there are many varieties on the Belgian waffle all depending on the different regions of Belgium.
The Belgian waffle you are used to is actually known as the Brussels Waffle and is not really eaten as breakfast in Belgium, but more as a snack and sold by bakery's or street vendors and eaten hot right out of hand. It comes with powdered sugar but can be intensified by adding fruits, whipped cream and chocolate.
What we at The Belgian Pearl™ bring you is another well known variety of Belgian Waffles, known as the Liege Waffle! Nothing you have ever tasted before unless you've been to Belgium on a trip.
The Liege Waffle was invented by a cook of the Prince-Bischop of Liege in the 18th century. They are smaller, sweeter and denser than the Brussels waffles. The Liege Waffle is also oblong, more substantial and has a significant crunch to it, thanks to the last-minute addition of pearl sugar to the batter which produces a caramelized sugar coating. The pearl sugar gives its distinctive flavor as well as some of the other ingredients. Most Liege waffles are served plain but can be served with toppings like fruits, ice-cream, and chocolate.
